Lowell Ackerman, DVM, DACVD, MBA, MPA Track: Practice Management Dr. Ackerman received his veterinary degree from Ontario Veterinary College and is board-certified in Dermatology. In addition to his veterinary credentials, Dr. Ackerman also holds a Masters in Public Administration (Harvard University), a Masters in Business Administration (University of Phoenix), and a Certificate in Veterinary Practice Administration (Purdue). Before joining Pfizer Animal Health, Dr. Ackerman was engaged in clinical practice, consulting, writing, and teaching. He has authored several books (including Five-Minute Veterinary Practice Management Consult, The Genetic Connection, and Atlas of Small Animal Dermatology), book chapters and journal articles, and has lectured extensively on topics in both medicine and management. |

Christopher Adin, DVM, DACVS Track: Pet Animal Dr. Adin received his DVM with Distinction from Cornell University in 1996. After completing a rotating internship and a fellowship in renal medicine and hemodialysis, he was accepted into a small animal surgery residency at UC Davis. Since becoming Board Certified in 2002, Dr. Adin has held faculty positions at the University of Florida and more recently, at the Ohio State University, where he practices soft tissue surgery. His primary interests are in the areas of surgical oncology, urinary incontinence and organ transplantation. |

Jack Advent, CAE Track: Shelter Animal Jack Advent, CAE is the Executive Director of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, a post he has held since 1998. He previously worked for two Ohio trade associations prior to joining OVMA. Advent is a past president and board member of the American Society of Veterinary Medical Association Executives, and the Ohio Society of Association Executives. He earned his certified association executive (CAE) designation from the American Society of Association Executives in 1994. Rick Alleman, DVM, Ph.D., DABVP, DACVP Tracks: Pet Animal, Technician Dr. Alleman received his DVM from Louisiana State University and practiced companion animal medicine and surgery for 9 years in private small animal practice. Dr. Alleman then completed a clinical pathology residency at the University of Florida and completed his Ph.D. degree in molecular biology of vector-borne diseases. He is a board certified diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practioners (Companion Animal Practice) and the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (Clinical Pathology). David Anderson, DVM, M.S., DACVS Track: Food Animal Dr. Anderson is a professor and Head of Agricultural Practices at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University. He earned both a B.S. degree in Animal Science and a DVM from North Carolina State University. He then completed an intensive rotating internship in large animal medicine and surgery at the University of Georgia and a Residency in Food Animal Medicine, Surgery, and Reproduction at Kansas State University under Dr. Guy St-Jean. Dr. Anderson became a board certified specialist in surgery (Diplomate American College of Veterinary Surgeons) in 1995. Dr. Anderson founded the International Academy of Farm Animal Surgeons and is the current Director of that organization. |

Mark Armfelt, DVM, DABVP Track: ABVP Evening Session Dr. Armfelt graduated from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1977. He completed the Michigan State University Dairy Health Management Certificate Program in1998 and achieved Board Certification in Dairy practice that same year. He was in private practice in Knox County, Ohio from 1977 until the summer of 2000 when he joined Monsanto Dairy Business. He spent 8 years working with Monsanto and came to Elanco with the purchase of the Posilac business. He currently holds the position Dairy Technical Consultant for Elanco Animal Health. He is a board member of the Ohio Dairy Industry Forum, and has been an Adjunct. Associate Professor of Veterinary Preventive Medicine at The Ohio State University. He also was co-founder and served 10 years as president of the Ohio Dairy Veterinarians. Dr. Armfelt resides in Gambier, Ohio with his wife Teresa and 5 of his 7 children. |

Clarke Atkins, DVM, DACVIM Track: Pet Animal Clarke Atkins, DVM, the Jane Lewis Seaks Distinguished Professor of Companion Animal Medicine at North Carolina State University, is a 1972 graduate of U.C.Davis, an Angell Memorial Animal Hospital intern, and is board-certified by the ACVIM (Medicine & Cardiology). Known for his research and teaching in small animal cardiology, he is a Norden Award recipient and the author of over 150 publications. Chris Bessent, DVM Track: Holistic & Integrative Medicine Chris Bessent, DVM presently practices holistic veterinary medicine in southern Wisconsin. Breitschwerdt is a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Christopher Cebra, DVM Track: Small Ruminants Dr. Chris Cebra has been working with camelids for twenty years. He has focused on digestive and metabolic disorders, and has written or co-authored over 50 scientific articles concerning camelids, 45 of which are listed on MedLine, and been involved with over 30 camelid research projects. He is currently the Head of the Department of Clinical Sciences at Oregon State University. He also teaches in the veterinary curriculum and works in the Large Animal Hospital, seeing internal medicine cases of all large animal species. |

| Nancy Ferguson, DVM Track: Hands-On Labs Dr. Nancy Ferguson is a 1985 graduate of Purdue University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. She practiced mixed animal medicine and surgery along with her husband of twenty –four years in Bloomington , Indiana. Her intense love of and interest in spay/neuter surgery was kindled by her employment at the F.A.C.E. Spay/ Neuter Clinic in the late 1990’s. Richard Gary, Ph.D. Track: Hands-On Labs Dr. Richard Gary received his Ph.D. in entomology from The Ohio State University and is currently the State Public Health Entomologist with the Ohio Department of Health Zoonotic Disease Program. At ODH, he oversees state-wide surveillance for vector-borne diseases. His primary focus has been on WNV and other mosquito transmitted arboviruses, but his program also conducts passive tick surveillance and has done so for over 20 years. It is this surveillance which has provided early evidence that disease carrying ticks once considered rare or incidental in Ohio are becoming more common and expanding their range in the state. |

Dr. Anne Gemensky Metzler Track: Equine Dr. Metzler was born in Wheeling, WV where she received her B.S. in biology at Wheeling Jesuit College in 1991. At The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, she received her DVM in 1995. After an internship at Michigan Veterinary Specialists and a year in general practice in Ohio, she returned to OSU to complete her Ophthalmology Residency and M.S. degree and achieved board certification in 2000. She’s been a faculty member since then and is currently a Professor in Comparative Ophthalmology. She resides in Dublin, Ohio with her husband, 6-year-old daughter and pets. |

His efforts have been recognized by the ASPCA, Buckeye State Sheriff's Association, Ohio Attorney General, and U.S. Attorney for southern Ohio. | William Lynch, B.S., M.S. Track: Aquaculture Bill Lynch received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in fisheries management from The Ohio State University in 1980 and 1982. Upon graduation, he remained at OSU attaining the positions of senior research associate and extension program specialist until his retirement in 2011. His work focused on fish management, aquatic plant management, as well as aquaculture. He co-started an aquaculture venture, Millcreek Perch Farm, LLC, in 2001 and now devotes most of his time to that venture as co-owner and general manager. John Mattoon, DVM, DACVR Track: Pet Animal, Hands-On Labs Dr. Mattoon graduated from the Washington-Oregon-Idaho program in Veterinary Medicine in 1984. Following two years in small animal practice, he attended the University of California, Davis, earning ACVR Diplomate status in 1989. He worked as a specialist in San Francisco before beginning his academic career at Oregon State University in 1991. Melinda Merck, DVM Track: Shelter Animal Dr. Melinda Merck is a forensic veterinarian consulting on cases involving animals. Dr. Merck assists investigators of animal cruelty with crime scene investigation as well as the examination of live and deceased victims. She helps with large scale operations including exhumations of burial sites and examination of skeletal animal remains. She frequently testifies as a veterinary forensic expert for animal cruelty cases around the country, including cases involving animal fighting, neglect and trauma. She is the author of the textbook, "Veterinary Forensics: Animal Cruelty Investigation," by Wiley-Blackwell Publishing with the 2nd edition due out in 2012. |

Suzanne Millman, B.Sc., Ph.D. Track: Food Animal Dr. Millman joined the faculty at Iowa State University in 2008, as Associate Professor of Animal Welfare in the Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine and Biomedical Sciences departments. Millman received her PhD in applied ethology from the University of Guelph, Canada, where she holds an adjunct appointment in Population Medicine. Glen Needham, Ph.D. Track: Public Health, Hands-On Labs Dr. Needham is a native Oklahoman, earning a Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University. He has been on the OSU entomology faculty for almost 34 years, spending much of that time conducting research on ticks, dust mites, bee mites, bed bugs and fleas. Glen is a co-organizer and lecturer in the Acarology Summer Program, which just celebrated its 60th anniversary. They will be offering an intensive two-week medical-veterinary acarology workshop this July. He is currently focused on determining the Ohio Lyme disease risk while working with the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, and Ohio Departments of Health, Natural Resources and Agriculture. |

Andrew Niehaus, DVM, M.S., DACVS Track: Technician Dr. Andy Niehaus is a surgeon at Ohio State’s Hospital for Farm Animals. He was raised on his family’s Angus farm, in West Virginia. He received a B.S. in chemical engineering from WVU in 1999 and a DVM from OSU in 2003. He completed an internship and residency in farm animal surgery at OSU in 2007. Dr. Niehaus is currently a large animal Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. | Barbara Oglesbee, DVM, DABVP Track: Technician Dr. Oglesbee has over 20 years of experience with treating pet birds and exotic pets. In addition to private practice, she serves as an Associate Professor, Avian and Exotic Animal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. At OSU, she previously served as head of the Companion Avian and Exotic Animal clinical services for over 15 years, and has continually taught courses in avian, rabbit and ferret medicine for the past 20 years. Pamela Reid, Ph.D., CAAB Track: Shelter Animal Pamela Reid is a certified applied animal behaviorist and VP of the ASPCA Anti-Cruelty Behavior Team. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology, specializing in animal behavior, from the University of Toronto. She and her colleagues evaluate the behavior of cruelty case victims, primarily from puppy mills, hoarding, and bloodsports. Rebecca Stepien, DVM, M.S., DACVIM Track: Pet Animal, Technician Dr. Rebecca Stepien graduated from the University of Wisconsin, School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987, and after an internship at the Animal Medical Center in New York, completed her residency and master's degree at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She taught at the Royal Veterinary College in London and at Virginia Tech before returning to the University of Wisconsin in 1994. She is a past president of ACVIM specialty of cardiology, and her research interests include therapy of heart failure, mitral valve disease in whippets and systemic hypertension. |

Bob Storey Track: Small Ruminants Bob Storey is a research scientist and the laboratory manager of the parasitology research labs of Dr. Ray M. Kaplan at the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. He is also the manager of the FAMACHA program for North America. Since joining “team Kaplan” in 2007, he has authored seven professional publications, made over 40 presentations at veterinary/professional conferences, trained hundreds of extension agents/producers in FAMACHA and Smart Drenching. His current research includes prevalence and mechanisms of anthelmintic resistance in small ruminants, novel approaches to parasite control, equine parasite resistance, as well as determining the Mycoplasma haemolamae prevalence in the US. |

Steve Thompson, DVM, DABVP Track: Staff Development Dr. Steve Thompson is a diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, certified since 2000 in Canine and Feline practice. He is a Clinical Associate Professor at Purdue University where he heads up the primary care rotation for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students as well as veterinary technology students. He has clinical interests in dentistry, behavior, pediatrics and geriatrics and recently served on the AAHA panel developing Canine Life Stage Guidelines. A native of Columbus, Ohio, and alumnus of The Ohio State University, he always enjoys returning home, even during February winters. |

Denise Tumblin, CPA Track: Practice Management, Hands-On Labs Denise Tumblin, owner of Wutchiett Tumblin and Associates, provides management, valuation, and transition services to independently-owned veterinary practices and teaching hospitals. She authors the Benchmarks Well-Managed Practice Study, and is the co-founder and facilitator of the WellMP Management Groups (equine, mixed, and companion animal). Denise is a graduate of The Ohio State University and a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Ohio Society of CPAs, VetPartners serving on the Board and Valuation Council, The National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, Veterinary Economics Editorial Advisory Board, AAHA, and the Capital Area Humane Society. |

Peter Weinstein, DVM, MBA Track: Practice Management Dr. Weinstein attended Cornell University before moving on to the University of Illinois to receive his DVM (1986). After graduation, he worked as an associate for a few years before opening his own practice. While running his practice, he identified a real need for enhanced business acumen to truly make his practice successful. So, while managing and practicing full time, he attended night school to receive his MBA from the University of Redlands (1993). As a result of this additional business knowledge, he was able to move his practice, expand his practice and then sell his practice to one of the corporate consolidators. Besides being a practitioner, Dr. Weinstein was also a practice management consultant with Catanzaro and Associates (nationally) and PAW Consulting (regionally). He served as President of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association and President of the California Veterinary Medical Association. Additionally, Dr. Weinstein is on the Board of Directors of the Charles and Mildred Schnurmacher Foundations, a private foundation. In September 2000, Dr. Weinstein stepped away from clinical practice to work full time as a practice management consultant and to run Veterinary Practice Consultants Brokerage®, a veterinary specific job placement firm that assists veterinarians find new associates and new associates find jobs. In September 2003, Veterinary Pet Insurance hired Dr. Weinstein to oversee their Claims Department as the Medical Director. Dr. Weinstein has returned to the world of practice management consulting for both veterinary practices and veterinary related corporations under his own company PAW Consulting. In December 2007, Dr. Weinstein was appointed Executive Director of the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association and is focused on making the veterinary profession a better profession for all those affiliated with it. Above all else, his proudest accomplishments are a great wife and two amazing teenage girls. |

Sara White, DVM Track: Shelter Animal, Hands-On Labs Dr. Sara White earned her DVM from North Carolina State University in 1998. In 2006, Dr. White started Spay ASAP Inc, a nonprofit MASH-style mobile spay/neuter clinic that collaborates with local humane organizations to provide low cost, high quality, high volume spay and neuter for shelter animals, low income pets, and feral cats. Since that time, she has spayed and neutered more than 22,000 cats and dogs in Vermont and New Hampshire. Dr. White currently serves on the board of the Association of Shelter Veterinarians, and is a member of the Veterinary Task Force to Advance Spay Neuter. |

Thomas Wittum, M.S., Ph.D. Track: Food Animal Dr. Wittum is a Professor of Veterinary Epidemiology in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Wittum teaches a variety of topics related to veterinary epidemiology, veterinary public health, and zoonotic diseases in both the professional DVM and the graduate curricula at OSU. His current research is in the area of zoonotic diseases and includes investigations of the ecology of antimicrobial resistance in intensively managed livestock operations, the public health risk of veterinary antimicrobial use, as well as the direct and food-borne zoonotic transmission of enteric pathogens. |
| Fritz Wood Track: Practice Management H.F. “Fritz” Wood is a Certified Financial Planner™ who has been fully engaged in the veterinary industry for over 18 years. He has conducted important research into the business of veterinary medicine, including pet owner research and identifying the attributes of high-performing veterinary practices. Other research compared and contrasted the business of veterinary medicine with other medical professions. Fritz is the former Personal Finance Editor for Veterinary Economics, the monthly business authority for practicing veterinarians. He has authored more than 100 articles related to the business of veterinary medicine and personal finance. He has also contributed content to several books and on-line educational experiences, including the Veterinary Nutritional AdvocateSM and VetMedTeam.com. Fritz conducts 50 to 75 seminars each year, each very well-received and highly evaluated by attendees. He teaches annually at most veterinary medical schools, as well as local, state, regional, national and international venues. Fritz has presented in nearly every state and in more than a dozen countries. His presentations have positively impacted thousands of individuals and practices worldwide. Fritz was Treasurer and served on the Board of Directors of the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). He also served on the Pricing Subcommittee of the National Commission on Veterinary Economic Issues (NCVEI), and is a Founding Member of Vet Partners (formerly know as the Association of Veterinary Practice Management Consultants and Advisors). Fritz holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Business Administration from the University of Kansas (1986).
