The economy has obviously affected all segments of our society — including veterinary medicine. The Emerging Issues Track on Friday tackles some tough questions facing the profession to keep you current on industry changes and explores how to adapt.
These sessions will highlight the recent Bayer study and how veterinarians and their clients are reacting to economic change and cost-of-care issues, as well as what strategies the profession can employ to combat these negative trends. In addition, the track will also take a look at perceived veterinary shortages in rural and food animal medicine, whether the economic pretext is sustainable, and how recent graduates who have been encouraged to meet these perceived needs are faring.
Join your colleagues for insight, introspection and thoughtful discussion on how your profession is reacting and should adapt to new challenges.
Beginning in 2012, OVMA will set aside money from MVC registrations for future veterinary and technician student scholarships. The new program, 5 for 5 for the Future, will dedicate $5 from every veterinarian and technician registration over the next five years to the fund. The OVMA estimates that this program will raise $17,500 in revenue each year, for a total nearing $90,000 over the five-year period.
Although the ABVP has been in existence for almost 50 years, many practitioners do not have a clear understanding of what the board is about or know they can become a specialist. In an effort to offer more veterinarians the opportunity to become a Diplomate in the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, an informational session will be held on Friday at 5 p.m. Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a Diplomate is encouraged to attend this seminar. A full description of the program can be found in the Session Description section on page 47.
This year’s Shelter Animal Track will feature a shelter medicine-themed poster session on the Exhibit Hall floor. Posters authored by veterinarians, shelter medicine graduate students and veterinary students will present current, relevant and exciting information regarding shelter medicine. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians will be judging the submissions, selecting three finalists to present in the Abstract Presentations session of the Shelter Animal Track on Thursday. The shelter posters will be on display Thursday, Friday and Saturday during Exhibit Hall hours. In addition, all approved abstracts will be included in the 2012 Conference Proceedings.
