MVC Sunday Lunch with Claire Simeone

Join us for a complimentary lunch on Sunday, Feb. 23, as we welcome marine mammal veterinarian Claire Simeone as the MVC 2020 keynote speaker.

Listening to Seals: How Knowledge Transfer Fuels Medical Innovation

Learn about Dr. Simeone’s work in marine mammal conservation and the importance of "zoognosis," or the understanding how knowledge is shared between species.

Claire Simeone has worked with unique marine mammal species around the world, and built a career focused on conserving species and furthering our understanding of health. She tells tales of gathering knowledge about wild, endangered animals, and caring for seals so sick their progress is counted in minutes.

Claire has created novel therapies, like a treatment for sea lion eye disease, and has researched health trends for marine mammals across North America. In her studies, Claire has focused on knowledge – and how our scientific discoveries spread in much the same way as the diseases we treat.

Innovations in the veterinary field continue to expand rapidly. Claire believes that the largest challenges of our lifetime will be solved with a return to listening to what the natural world has to share. This inspiring talk will leave audiences with a new perspective of how close the fundamentals are to the leading edge of our medicine.

About the Speaker

Dr. Claire Simeone specializes in working with marine mammals, studying the connections between animal health, ocean health, and our own health. During her decade-plus in the veterinary field, she has created novel therapies and has researched diseases, treatments, and health trends for marine mammals across North America. Dr. Simeone has worked both in the field and in hospitals around the world to improve animal health and welfare, train the next generation of health leaders, and advocate for wildlife conservation.
